Fragments of Perception: An Autistic Odyssey

Fragments of Perception: An Autistic Odyssey

Utilising immersive technologies, they will work with collaborators to create scenarios that allow participants to engage deeply with the complexity of identity and perception, embodying life through another’s eyes, in forest and water settings.

Fragments of Perception will explore the intersection of human consciousness and the natural environment, integrating autistic lived experience characterised by a sense of duality and doubles.

A primary feature of the project involves creating an interactive film segment set in a digitally rendered forest, where participants can engage in dynamic movement and even dance. This allows for autistic stimming (self-stimulatory behaviour) to manifest as an artistic methodology. Participants will navigate the forest from two perspectives: a first-person viewpoint, as if embodied in the environment, and a third-person perspective, observing the back of a character’s head - similar to a narrative-driven video game. This duality intentionally reflects the autistic experience of feeling simultaneously connected to and distanced/dissociated from one's surroundings, inviting audiences to reflect on perceptions of reality.

Connecting to nature through this autistic embodied perspective will drive social justice narratives that go beyond sensory differences, emphasising the richly sensorial experiences of encountering nature as a collaborator. Dancing in the forest environment allows participants to articulate emotions and experiences through movement, reinforcing the idea that stimming can be a creative expression rather than merely a behavioural response.

A similar approach will be applied to a water scene, where participants can feel immersed, interacting with water meaningfully. The auditory landscape will feature internal dialogues as personal voices or intrusive thoughts, challenging traditional notions of self-identity. This sound layer embodies the dual nature of experience, mirroring real-life scenarios of anxiety, self-doubt, and sensory perception often associated with autism. Through this innovative project, I hope to deepen the understanding of autistic experience, engaging with the claustrophobic sensation of being in a body.

Aims of the Project

This project, Fragments of Perception: An Autistic Odyssey will significantly impact the artists creative practice by pushing the boundaries of their artistic exploration into immersive experiences. Collaborating with diverse specialists, including technologists and artists, will enhance their skills in using accessible technology, sound design, and interactive storytelling.

Engaging with their neurodivergent peers will deepen their understanding of identity and representation, allowing them to convey authentic narratives that resonate with a broader audience.

The project’s emphasis on experimentation and audience engagement aims to foster a transformative creative environment, encouraging me to embrace innovation and vulnerability. Ultimately, this journey will not only refine my artistic voice but also strengthen my commitment to inclusive practices and amplify marginalised perspectives within the arts.

Through incorporating my own lived experiences alongside those of my collaborators, I aim to create work that challenges conventional portrayals of autism and neurodiversity.
