October has just begun and we have a jam-packed seasonal blog in store for you. We’re sharing immersive events and experiences you can see and get involved in across the UK which includes many from our funded projects.

London

BARRIO: An Immersive Theatre-Club Experience

Sunday 4 October – various times

From Experiment-funded artists Sara Al Ghanem and Maria Cuervo.

A rave at the edge of demolition. A community at the edge of change.

Step into a disappearing council estate — not to watch a story of gentrification, but to move inside it. Through bone-conducting headphones, navigate the intimate memories of a migrant family as Fernanda and her loved ones face a choice: resist, or flee. Then dissolve into a community rave, where spatial audio turns stories of displacement and resilience into shared release, with Patricia Doors performing a live DJ set throughout.

LFF Expanded Industry Day 

Thursday 15 October – 10:00-20:00

This year is the 70th edition of the BFI London Film Festival. Their LFF Expanded Industry Day brings together the latest in the fields of gaming, immersive and beyond, at BFI London Film Festival. This Industry Day includes some of our funded artists Peter and the Wolf AR (PAW) by AΦE and PILGRIMS by Darkfield.

Kow – Unearthing the Voices of West Penwith (Immersive Installation)

Cornwall

Saturday 3 October

Kow by Experiment-funded artist Natalia Mamcarczyk explores the social, cultural, and natural wealth of the southwestern tip of Cornwall.

The immersive installation includes a 28-speaker array, VR headset and XR interactions, multi-projection screening and analogue 35mm photography. At its heart are the voices of local people from Zennor to Cape Cornwall.

UN/VEIL: An Infinite Choral Soundbath

Plymouth

Thursday 8  Friday 9 October

What if a choir could sing forever – and your voice could change what happens next? 

UN/VEIL, which is an Expand-funded project, is an interactive audiovisual installation combining human voices, spatial sound and responsive 360° visuals. The installation is based on work by  ILĀ and James Gibbons Macgregor with singers from London Contemporary Voices and their sister choirs across the UK.

XR Sunday Social 

Innovate UK’s Immersive Tech Network Kent Hub Launch – Kent

Sun 18 October – 14:00-17:00

The future doesn’t get decided in one place. It’s shaped by local communities, grassroots initiatives, institutions and government, often without any of them talking to each other about what they’re building together. For the next XR Sunday Social, Experiment-funded artists Aoi and Esteban host their round table at A+E Lab with an amazing panel including Asha Easton, Co-founder of XRDI and a member of our research and management team.

Taylormade Studios: Virgo Multiverse – Leicester

Thu 22 October – 19:00 – 21:00

Tales of intergalactic diaspora told through multimedia multidisciplinary melanated minds and movement combined with open source software and lo-fi hardware. Explore-funded Artist Vidal Montgomery presents and produces an interactive multimedia exploration of themes of identity and citizenship.

Resistance, Re-Imagine – Birmingham

Running until Sunday 3 January 2027

Resistance, Re-Imagine is a collaboration between GRAIN Projects and Pathshala Media Institute (Bangladesh), featuring artists Mushfiq Mahbub Turjo and Zillah Bowes (who is also an Experiment-funded artist). The international residency is a dialogue and exchange on themes of resistance and reimagining and an exploration of the climate emergency.  Part of British Council’s Connections Through Culture.

Mapping the Anthropocene: Hopeful Futures

An exhibition exploring the role of data and mapping to make things visible, particularly in the context of the climate emergency. Showing us how mapping transforms complex climate data into visible patterns, revealing the deep connections between technology, economics, and environmental power structures.

Belfast International Arts Festival

Wednesday 14 October – Tuesday 8 November

Belfast International Arts Festival is the city’s longest-running international arts event. This year it returns with a new season of contemporary arts and culture in over 30 venues across the city and featuring the very best international and homegrown artists in theatre, dance, music, visual arts, literature, film and a new immersive strand.

This Festival includes a few of our funded projects Lost Communications: Underwater by An-Ting & Ian Gallagher and Becoming by Helena Hamilton.

Belfast XR Festival

Monday 2 – Tuesday 3 November

Belfast XR Festival is back bringing unmissable immersive experiences to Belfast audiences across two days at The Black Box, presented as part of Belfast Film Festival. With two of the most talked about works in international immersive; The Baby Factory Is Closed – Directed by Expand-funded Artist Deepa Mann-Kler and Escape the Internet – Directed by Lucas Rizzotto.

Alongside this there will be a programme of industry events for Northern Ireland’s growing XR community.

Belfast Media Festival

Tuesday 10 – Wednesday 11 November

The Belfast Media Festival is returning to The MAC, Belfast. Now in the 17th edition, the festival continues to grow. Their reputation is becoming that of a destination festival – providing access to, and knowledge from, brilliant speakers, commissioners, developers, producers, writers and famous faces from the UK, Ireland, Europe and beyond, for indies, freelancers, and students across Ireland.

At this year’s Belfast Media Festival, Immersive Arts spotlights Experiment-funded artist Niamh Gormley and collaborators Brian Gormley and Leandros Ntolas, whose groundbreaking interactive film prototype Boa Island brings ancient myth, contemporary storytelling and immersive technology together in an atmospheric exploration of memory, folklore and place.

Derry/Londonderry

Foyle Film Festival 

Wednesday 18 – Sunday 29 November

Established in 1987 and led by Nerve Centre, Foyle Film Festival is Northern Ireland’s longest running film festival. Taking place in venues across Derry~Londonderry each November to bring the best of international cinema and industry players to the city. As part of the festival, Immersive Arts will present a dedicated day of immersive storytelling at Nerve Centre on 20 November, bringing together artist showcases, live demonstrations, discussion and networking to explore how emerging technologies are expanding creative practice and audience experience.

Cardiff

The Art of Change | BODIES OF WATER | Ôl | Haunts

Running until Monday 11 October

Wales Millennium Centre’s first VR Cinema (daytime programme) is an exciting opportunity for audiences to experience 3 extraordinary virtual reality works back to back:

  • The Art of Change – a deeply personal audio-visual journey that traverses time and space. 
  • BODIES OF WATER – a VR film inviting you to hold your breath and let yourself be transported and transformed by water in the company of curious individuals.
  • Ôl | Haunts – a single user VR experience that interweaves visual traces of landscape with archive footage and creative storytelling.

FDUK 2026 

Friday 9 – Saturday 10 October

The UK’s premiere celebration of all things fulldome will be hosted in CULTVR Lab (Cardiff, Wales). Featuring the work of leading fulldome artists and producers from the UK and around the world. The event is a great opportunity to experience fulldome creativity in all its diversity, and to meet and learn from fellow immersive creatives.
