Sites of Memory

Sites of Memory

We often lose personal memory in official archive narratives - due to institutional perspectives, but also due to the ‘unarchivable’ elements of the human experience.

In a time of increased narrative control, global tension and censorship, it is more important than ever to interrogate archival practices and how they may contribute to the controlled ‘collective remembering’ of certain parts of history. How can we challenge official archive practices by exploring interrelations between human capture, documentation and interaction with the archive?

Aims of the project

Drawing on theorists that examine the archive as an instrument of power, my work will explore the notion of creating an ‘alternative site’ of collective memory, building on my grandfather’s archive of the Cold War by adding new research, reflection, and data visualisation.

I create physical artefacts for audience engagement and interaction with complex issues, but I am curious about technologies that help expand understanding and interest in communication design, through multiple senses. I aim to develop skills in immersive art technologies that can expand my physical work into an interactive, responsive exhibit.
