The Hum

The Hum

The Hum is an multispecies opera exploring how collaborative storytelling can inspire action in the face of perilous climate change.

Using Opera (deriving from Opus, meaning "to work") as a structure to expand upon Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing’s writing which suggests that in the midst of our climate emergency, recovery will be the ‘work’ of multispecies collaborations. ‘The Hum’ will lead participants on an immersive experience through a series of handheld devices.

During the project, Gregory Herbert will collaborate with sound artists, creative coders and data analysts to develop these interactive devices which act as the conductor, immersing participants in entangled ecological systems with a series of visual and audible experiences that respond to real time data.

Aims of the project

Development of handheld conductors ‘The Hum’ which leads participants on an immersive experience.

I am aiming to use the project to explore how immersive technologies can become a tool to open dialogues with audiences about the climate emergency and more than human world.

The funding will become a springboard for my practice to gain insight and training in the field of real time data and creative coding. Whilst accelerating my practice to think about how the audience interacts with artworks outside of the gallery context and the accessibility to data/ knowledge around the environment and ecological systems.
