Researching and exploring current audio technologies to design and develop interactive and reactive audio-textile installations.
The sensory attributes of the visual, tactile, aural and olfactory will be considered and explored with the audience interaction and engagement integral to the artworks.

Aims of the project
The Explore project would enable me to access training, attend workshops and gain support in sourcing relevant audio technologies and specialised equipment available to design and develop ideas for audio-textile installations. Investigating the idea of ‘place’ and consider how we are woven into the landscape, through history, poetry, nature and memory.
My practice to date has involved designing and creating audio-textile installations. These installations have been site-referential at historical sites in Wales. The audio and textile works created merge together and highlight the affective bond between people and place, and the interweaving relationship of land and language, into something that is historically and socially experienced.

Ainsley Hillard

Ainsley’s undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Applied Arts and Constructed Textiles focussed on traditional tapestry-weaving, exploring the skills and processes of transfiguring pictorial images into woven structures. Whilst she is fascinated by the physical construction of cloth, as an artist, she also wanted to consider the metaphorical and conceptual ideas of weaving and its relation to body, memory and space.
Her practice developed to challenge the traditional conventions of weaving, taking an explorative approach to combine weaving with photography, print and audio technologies to create textile and sound installations that are multi-sensory, immersive and responsive to audience interaction.
Her practice is largely site-referential, informed by specific places and the memories they hold. It reflects a deep appreciation for the local environment, the significance of the social history, the relationship between the land and language directly associated with a place.
