Creating While Caring
An exploration of immersive audience engagement methods to help me shine a spotlight on two subjects I am passionate about: creating and caring.
As a carer, my home life tends to be chaotic and unstable and in the past I have allowed myself to stay in my creative comfort zone as a safety net. But as caring, benefits, and disabilities become frequent points of discussion in news and politics, I want to be a voice for myself, my child, and other carers who are bombarded with negative opinions of our roles and our lives.

Aims of the project
My aim is to re-frame understanding of what caring can entail and encourage dissection of the stigma associated with caring and being ‘economically inactive’ while actually providing a vital role in society.
My project will give me time to explore how to ethically and sensitively plan an immersive event that highlights the experience of being an unpaid carer, while challenging audience members’ preconceptions of caring through technological interactions.

Gaynor Jones

She/Her
Gaynor Jones is a writer and carer based in Oldham. She is the recipient of a Northern Writer’s Debut Award for her short fiction and an ACE DYCP grant to develop her novel writing. She is a frequent performer at spoken word nights, and was a guest of For Books’ Sake at the Edinburgh Fringe. She has won or placed in several writing competitions and has taught for Comma Press and Didsbury Arts Festival among others. In 2024 she was a virtual writer-in-residence for Melbourne UNESCO City Of Literature. She likes anything strange, scary or spooky and is represented by Laura Williams at Greene & Heaton
