Aims of the project
As a deaf visual artist, I have started to experiment with audio and visual technologies to enhance the installations I create. This funding will be used to give me time to work with experienced practitioners to explore visual and audio immersive technologies to learn what the technologies can do, understand what equipment these practitioners use, and see how the technologies can enhance both my creative practice and the experience of my audience.
I like many deaf people, use a hearing aid, meaning that my experience of sound is very different to that of the hearing majority. I want to experiment with spatial audio, using different types of equipment and placement to see how to maximise the impact for all, especially those who use assistive technology to access sound. This will give my future installations greater depth and allow them to be immersive experiences.
My other area of focus is portraying British Sign Language using film and animation. This funding will allow me to work with an experienced deaf professional to create a short piece of BSL story/poetry and corresponding animation as a backdrop to the filming, and then time in a 360 degree video studio to experiment with capturing film footage to help me understand how I can utilise 360-degree video in future installations.
I will also purchase equipment such as speakers and soft/hardware that will provide optimal connection with my hearing aids for ongoing use in my work.
