The Surface of Things
The Surface of Things
How can we know what we see, if we only ever see the surface of things?
In seeking better ways to use art to explore the visual concepts that interest me, I have been trying to combine the two disciplines of painting and sculpture. This has involved me experimenting with incorporating different saccadic viewpoints and perspectives into a single figure. In the past year or so I have begun making, what I consider to be, 2D sculptures or 3D paintings which play with ideas of 'flatness versus depth'. This, in turn, has led me to use photogrammetry to scan and import experimental figurative sculptural forms so that they can be scaled up and viewed in augmented reality.

Aims of the project
With the aid of this funding I hope to learn more about the features of immersive technology which might allow an artist to:
- Reinforce or undermine the viewer’s perceptions of the 3D world and the objects in it
- Link digital objects to physical objects; apply dynamic ‘skins’/surface effects to 3D digital objects
- Invite interaction by the viewer
