Inclusive Participation: Meaningful Real-time Co-Creation

Inclusive Participation: Meaningful Real-time Co-Creation

Explore how immersive technologies can make participatory, site-responsive live performance more inclusive, particularly to enable audiences who are not literate, not tech-confident, and/or have sensory impairments to contribute meaningfully.

Through consultations with technologists and access experts, I will investigate how technologies can help capture authentic audience responses in real-time and support personalised live experiences, where every audience member actively shapes the performance and becomes a co-creator.

Can immersive technologies unlock new ways for audiences to actively participate in site-responsive live performance, particularly those excluded from traditional engagement?

Aims of the project

My focus is on making participation meaningful, emotionally engaged, personalised, and accessible so it can actively shape a show’s narrative in real time. I’m currently developing participatory site-responsive works and want to explore embedding inclusive immersive technologies within the early stage of the process.

Questions to explore are:

How can immersive technologies enable audiences who are not literate, not tech-confident, and/or have sensory impairments to contribute meaningfully and emotionally?
How can technologies capture authentic emotional responses in real time and present them to a creative team or audience to input into live performance, at scale, outdoors?
What prompts, tools, or invitations most effectively encourage authentic contributions?
How can technologies support personalised audience experiences or track individuals in real time —addressing people by name, tailoring interactions—without excluding those unfamiliar with technology?
