The Five of Us
An exploration of family and memory through immersive 360 film.
Most of us have old videos and pictures that are rarely shared outside our own families, so we are looking to explore how to draw on those familiar moments and relatable scenes so they resonate with a wider audience in a public setting. We will be using this opportunity to dedicate time to the hours of footage Ella has gathered and to pull out possible story arcs and avenues the immersive film could explore.
By sitting with and spending time with the archive, then trialling sequences using immersive sound and vision, we will test how intimate videos and moments, those of which are normally only seen by family members (if watched at all), transfer to a 360 experience shared with strangers. We are hoping to gain an understanding of how to build the story in a different way than for standard cinema screens and how the immersive technology impacts on the audience reaction.

The Five of Us combines home video footage, interviews and photographs captured over the period when my Grannie began developing Alzheimer’s, which coincided with my own uncertainty surrounding fertility. As her life gradually returned to a childlike state, I was left wondering whether a new life might ever begin. - Ella

Laura has produced and executive produced a wide range of short films, features and 360 work and is committed to developing new talent in the Cornwall and the wider South West.
Ella Turner
Director

Ella is a South West based documentary filmmaker who also works in Film & TV. Ella’s work concentrates on observing other people’s lives, capturing moments one may think are unimportant.
Ella is a co-owner of the community darkroom CONTACT based in Totnes, Devon, where they work with new and old photographers, as well as offering young people the chance to engage in learning the tactile art of photography. Ella is also an advocate for helping young people get into the arts which she carries into her film work, helping underrepresented young people in the South West get work experience opportunities in the industry.
