Sensory Circus Research
We'll explore Haptics, Spatial Audio, and Binaural Sound to understand how we can capitalise on other senses to make circus more exciting, and thrilling for disabled audiences.
Circus and movement are traditionally less accessible to visually impaired people because they’re visual. We'll explore how we can use technology to add other senses into circus, making it more accessible to visually impaired, neurodiverse, and PMLD audiences.
Karina is visually impaired. When she attends a show, she's listening to audio description, and it’s easy to disengage. We want to understand how to completely immerse audiences in a show.

Meet Make Space Circus

Make Space Circus is a disabled-led project, Producing UK & international disability circus projects. It’s inception was a commission from Unlimited to make and showcase ‘Where Do I Sit?’; a collaboration with Tamba Africa Social Circus, in Zimbabwe that took the form of a research project and cabaret about who gets a seat at the table.
Karina Jones is a visually impaired Actor, Circus Aerialist, Voice Coach, and Access and Audio description Consultant. She’s a BA Honors Graduate in Drama from Liverpool Hope University and a Masters graduate of Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She trained with Greentop in Circus Performance and has 20+ years experience performing for e.g. Extraordinary Bodies, Graeae Theatre Company, Frantic Assembly, and Royal Shakespeare Company.
She’s the recipient of the Jerwood Arts Live Work Fund, Arts Council Wales’ Creative Steps Programme, and is a Clore Fellow.

Amy is a Creative Producer and Fundraiser, with over 10+ years experience working with e.g. The Revel Puck Circus, Levantes Dance Theatre, Hikappe Theatre, and Incandescence Circus. She is the Co-Director of Lavrak Circus; a circus production house and platform for circus artists, offering artist support, and commissioning opportunities. She is also the Co-Director of Make Space Circus, alongside Karina.
